Thure de Thulstrup

Born into a distinguished diplomatic family, de Thulstrup had a military education and served in the French Foreign Legion and as an officer during the Franco-Prussian War. He studied art in Paris and later at the Art Student's League in New York City. Combining his military knowledge with his artistic pursuits, de Thulstrup specialized in war and naval scenes. He also worked for periodicals including Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, Harper's Weekly, and Collier's Magazine. He also illustrated works by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Francis Hopkins Smith.
