Frederick Catherwood

British architect, painter, drawer and illustrator Frederick Catherwood studied architecture in London from 1815 to 1820. in 1839-1840 and 1841-1842, he joined the expeditions of the archaeologist John Lloyd Stephens to Mexico and Guatemala. During these expeditions Catherwood used a camera oscura to produce exact and detailed drawings of the ruins of the Maya civilization, which later provided the illustrations for Stephen's scientific reports, Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas and Yucatan, published in 1841, and Incidents of Travel in Yucatan, published in 1843. In 1837, Catherwood was elected into the National Academy of Design as an Honorary member.
