1896-1941
American (Massachusetts; New Jersey)
Maitland was born in New Jersey, and created many iconic images of New York City, but probably best remembered for his book illustrations of Jane’s Island, a story of Cape Cod and Islands and various adventures of the Maine coastline to name a few. His skill could equally capture the strength and vitality of the growing metropolis, as well as the peace and charm of the New England backroads and waterways. He was also a successful teacher acting as an assistant prof at Smith College.
