Daniel Van Voorhis

Daniel van Voorhis, also known Daniel Voorhis, worked as an independent gold and silversmith in Philadelphia from 1775-1782, and on Princeton, New Jersey, from 1782-1784. In 1784 he moved to New York City and from 1784-1785 was part of the partnership Van Voorhis, Bayley and Coley located at 27 Hanover Square in Lower Manhattan. From 1785-1787, the partnership was known as Van Voorhis and Coley. He worked in the partnership Van Voorhis & Schenck from 1791 forward, and was joined by his son in 1797-1798.
An accomplished silversmith, Van Voorhis is best known in numismatic circles for his partnership with Ruben Harmon for coining Vermont coppers, as well as for petitioning the New York State legislature to coin coppers for the state. From 1786-1788, Van Voorhis was the mint master at Rupert Bennington, Vermont. He was the Customshouse weigher in Brooklyn, New York, from 1805-1819.
