Storey began his artistic career as a painter primarily of landscapes. However on a visit to the Suffolk coast one summer he was inspired to take up painting marine subjects, and was immediately successful. He became a member of the Royal Society of Marine Artists, serving on its Council, and was ultimately elected President from 1988-1993.
