Frederick J. Hoertz was a marine painter and lithographic artist. He worked for aircraft and shipping companies throughout his life. During World War I he contributed to ship camouflage suggesting ideas such as camouflage patterns on the starboard side of a war ship and the black silhouette of a destroyer on the port side which made it look as if it were being escorted.
